The title of your Web page is the first piece of information that an Internet searcher will see about your site. Many people will decide whether or not to click to your site based on the title text.

Title tags are also used for:
1. Indexing your site with almost all major search engines.
2. Describing your page when someone adds it to their Favorites or Bookmarks.

For these reasons, make sure that your title tag is descriptive, unique, clear, concise and contains keywords that people use when they are searching for your site. Do not use “Home Page”. This is neither descriptive nor unique. Also, use different titles for different pages. This will allow your results to be unique in the results page if multiple pages from your site are displayed together.

The Keywords Meta Tag is Still Used

Even though Google and other search engines do not use the keywords meta tag, many search engines still do.

Three examples for using the keywords meta tag are:

1. To include synonyms of words that are not included in the content of your page. People search on many variations of words and phrases. Sometimes it is hard to include all of the different variations of those words in the content of your page without making your page sound like a keywords page.

2. To place emphasis on certain words. It is not always easy to place your major keywords at the top of your page or in a

tag. Your major keywords might not be introduced until the middle of your page. Using the keywords meta tag, you can add these keywords to inform the search engines that these words are important. Remember two important rules when using this tag: When emphasizing keywords, do not place the same keyword more than two times in the keywords meta tag. This could be considered keyword spamming and can reduce your ranking value. Also, do not place irrelevant keywords in your meta tag. Using irrelevant keywords could get your site band from many search engines.

3. Another use for the keywords meta tag is to add words from different languages. A multi-language site with one language as its default page might want to add words from other languages to attract people speaking languages that are different than the language of the default page.

Bing Overtakes Yahoo! as the #2 U.S. Search Engine

For the first time, MSN/Windows Live/Bing Search overtook Yahoo! as the second most popular search engine in the U.S. with a 13.9% share of search volume in August 2010, a 0.25% delta increase from the previous month. Although Google saw little change in its month-over-month search volume, it still dominates the search market, accounting for 65% of all U.S. searches.

Yahoo! followed Google and MSN/Windows Live/Bing Search with a 13.1% share of U.S. searches, falling from a 14.3% share in July 2010 (a 1.2% delta decrease or an 8% relative decrease).

In terms of a year-over-year comparison, Google has seen little change in its share of search while Yahoo! has seen a small but steady decline, going from a 16.0% share to 13.1% (a delta drop of 2.9% or a relative drop of 18%). MSN/Windows Live/Bing’s share has grown from 10.7% in August 2009 to 13.9% (a delta increase of 3.2% or a relative increase of 30%).
